FAQ

What is the deadline for applications?

We accept applications right up until the start of each Semester provided there are still places available.

What if I can't attend an interview?

We can arrange to conduct interviews by skype to assess your folio based on scanned or photographed images.

What should I include in my application folio?

The Academy holds free Folio Presentation Workshops to help you select and present your work in the most effective manner. For more information see our Career Support page.

If some of your work is unavailable - for example, if it is currently being marked for your VCE - we simply recommend that you bring in examples of the best work you can access.

I want to study Design but I'm not sure which major study to apply for; can you advise me?

The Bachelor of Design Arts enables students to experience introductory units in six major study streams and to pursue studies in their sub-major program to second year level. This means you get to explore Design from a number of perspectives.

If you change your mind about your preferred major study, you may apply to change programs at any time in the degree program. (Please note, however, that if you have already made significant progress in one major study, switching majors may extend the length of your degree.)

Can I speak with the Academy's Admissions Advisor about my application?

Yes. Our Admissions Advisor is available Monday to Friday. Please contact the Office on +61 3 9676 9000.

Does the Academy offer RPL to mature-aged students?

Yes. If you can demonstrate that you have the knowledge, skills and experience required to satisfy the specified unit outcomes, you will be granted Recognition of Prior Learning.


If I have studied a related course at another institution, can I transfer to the Academy Degree?

Yes. If you successfully completed studies at one of the Academy's affiliates, you will be guaranteed a place at the Academy and automatically receive credit for your previous studies.

If you studied at another registered provider and successfully completed an accredited qualification or units related to your proposed major study in the Bachelor of Design Arts, you will be eligible to apply for credit.

Should I apply as a Domestic or an International student?

If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or you have a Permanent Residency visa, you are classed as a Domestic student. (Please note, however, that unless you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent 'humanitarian' visa, you will not be eligible for FEE-HELP and will have to pay your tuition fees up-front.)

All other applicants are considered International students and should apply as per the International section. of our website.


If my application is successful, am I allowed to defer the commencement of my studies?

Yes. The Academy's policy is to allow, in special circumstances, a one-year deferment of study for new undergraduate students according to the following policy:

  • no deferment is allowed where the student intends to study elsewhere – in this case the Academy will determine whether the deferment is appropriate;
  • fee-paying international students are not eligible to defer;
  • applications must be received in writing before the relevant enrolment day;
  • a Deferment Deposit of $500 applies to applications to defer – failure to pay the Deferment Deposit will result in the application lapsing and the place being declared vacant;
  • the Deferment Deposit will be fully refundable upon enrolment; if an applicant elects not to enrol after the deferment period, the deposit will be forfeited to cover administration costs;
  • students who do not enrol or who do not have applications for deferral approved may apply to enrol at a later date but are not guaranteed a place;
  • applicants who do not enrol before the end of the deferment period will forfeit their place; and
  • no guarantee is made that the same course will be available in the following academic year.

    Applicants who receive an offer and wish to defer must:
  • write to the Deferral Officer admissions@academyofdesign.edu.au citing their VTAC application number and the name of the course in which they've been offered a place;
  • advise the Academy by telephone that an application to defer has been sent by email.

How  do I pay my initial deposit via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)?

To take up your offer of study at the Academy, it is necessary to pay a $500 deposit.  Further details that will assist with an EFT are below.
